My journey has been a winding road, for sure. After gaining experience in the career world at an early age, I realized my passion was in understanding and helping people. So, as a 22-year-old single parent of a beautiful little girl, I decided to go back to school and study psychology. I didn’t know where the path would take me, but I was certain it would make me happier than commuting to Northern Virginia every day just to make “good money.”
After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in psychology in 2008, I secured my first position in mental health services with a local residential intensive therapeutic program. Two years later, I transitioned to another organization working with economically disadvantaged children in the public school system. It was during this time that decided to pursue a master’s degree in Professional Counseling.
However, winding paths are described as such for a reason. In 2012, I took a hard turn and decided to purchase the restaurant I had worked in throughout my higher education journey. Over the course of the next 7 years, I operated and managed my business while slowly finishing my degree, as I knew providing counseling and therapy was the ultimate goal. In 2018, I completed an internship in Romney, West Virginia, where I provided therapy to adolescents and adults, and graduated with a Master of Professional Counseling degree.
After working to balance my business and therapy work for several months, I decided to break from mental health work to focus on my business. Then, in March of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic provided the “hard stop” that became the catalyst for another pivot on my path. The next 15 months were exhausting, very difficult, and very rewarding. They also gave me final confirmation that it was time to leave the business behind and start a new chapter providing much needed mental health services to individuals in our community. The love and support of my husband and children, and all the joy they bring me, allowed me the courage to make the move.
Throughout my journey, I have learned that people in all levels of society experience significant emotional and mental struggles, even those who come from affluence and privilege. I have solidified my understanding of the effects of adverse childhood experiences, as well as the resiliency we all possess when given the support and tools to counter the hardness of life. I have walked with individuals living substance misuse and abuse and helped them unpack the contributing factors and rediscover their value and worth. I have learned there is nothing more beautiful that when a person begins to love themselves again.
I believe our emotional and mental health are directly connected to our physical health, and vice versa. I help individuals affected by depression, anxiety, trauma, substance misuse, and maladaptive thinking identify and address the factors causing pain and distress, so they can move toward the healthiest version of themselves. It’s only after we find the cracks in our foundation, understand and accept how they came to be there, and fix them that we can confidently rise to new heights. After all, life shouldn’t be spent wondering and worrying about a collapse.
To say that I am excited to be part of the Healing Hands team is an understatement. Together, Stacy, Lynda, Anna, and I will be providing our community with streamlined access to comprehensive health and well-being services. I believe our passion and commitment to our integrated model will have a profound impact
Anna Ennis-Martinez, FNP-C
I grew up in rural Western Maryland and started attending Allegany Community College while still in High school. Interestingly, by the time I graduated with my Associates degree in Nursing in 1994, I could push Morphine but not yet buy a beer.
I began my career in Virginia Beach working solo nights on a small Pediatric unit. (Talk about sink or swim?). Since the unit was small, I was trained for the Newborn nursery and Floated to the Special care Nursery at Norfolk General. So, in 1996 I was recruited to work at WMC on the mother/baby-Nursery unit, eventually I transferred to the NICU. Ultimately, I spent 17 years working at WMC with mother’s, sick infants, and children. It was while working in the NICU, met I Stacy. She is one of the people who encouraged me to go back to school. She was already in the FNP program, and when I whined “But Stacey, it’s going to take me like 5 years to get it all done”. Her reply to me, “Five years is going to go by whether you go to grad school or not, you might as well start”. So here we go….
So, it did take 5 years. I started in a co-op with students at Shenandoah University who were supposed to bridge from Associates degree to master’s and skip the bachelor’s degree. There was also a group going from bachelor’s to Masters starting at the same time. I met and became study buddies and instant friends with Lynda, who also enrolled in the bridge program. What the professors and admin did not expect was for most of the bridge students to hustle and get all the course work done, plus the extra courses required for their bachelor’s degree and graduate at the same time as the bachelor’s to Masters group. (Lynda and I know how to aim high and work hard).
So back while in the NICU, with Stacy and I both in school, we daydreamed about starting a clinic one day together. Of course, my fantasy clinic came with a Starbucks and a calming water feature. But wow! How could I have known it was future forecasting? Not so many months ago, I was drinking Starbucks with Lynda and Stacy contemplating a change, and now here I am with my amazing colleagues Stacy, Lynda and Laura…. And so, the adventure begins.
Now back to Shenandoah University and the BSN that I earned in 2010 and earned my Masters in Nursing in 2012. After graduation in 2012, I began my career as a Nurse Practitioner working for Winchester OB/GYN. What was a surprise was finding myself pregnant with my 4th child right after starting as a new NP and already having a 10 month old! Those years were a blur and I moved closer to northern Virginia to have help with those babies and eventually left the OB office and worked for Minute Clinic. I was the NP who was responsible for the opening/start up of the new minute clinic location site in Centerville, VA. In 2017 I came back to Valley health at the Strasburg Quick Care and Front Royal Urgent care after we moved to Haymarket, VA, still my current home. While at the Minute Clinic In 2016 I was awarded the Paragon award for excellence for my region and Valley Health Service award for Courage in 2017.
I have always had an interest in Eastern Medicine, the use of herbals, acupuncture, and Chiropractor care in conjunction with traditional Western Medicine. I am working toward my functional medicine degree through IFM (Institute of functional medicine). I believe in integrative care, a patient is more than a group of disease systems, but mind, body and spirit. I believe in health wellness care, not only disease care.
My passion has always been my family. Being a wife and mother to my 4 children has always influenced the quality of care I give. I love being a Nurse Practitioner because you can motivate and encourage the family, meeting them where they are to establish wellness and healthy living which in turn can bring about generational change starting early in childhood development to affect later life health.

I started my nursing career in Pennsylvania at Geisinger Medical Center school of nursing and Penn State University. After working a few years in ICU/CCU, I was recruited to the Winchester area by Winchester Medical Center to work in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit, then spent the next 10 years in the Neonatal ICU. During this time, I completed my master’s degree in nursing at Shenandoah University and was certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. For the past 11 years I have worked in outpatient Neurology, treating patients with a variety of conditions including multiple sclerosis, memory loss, sleep disorders and migraine headaches. During this time, I have gained invaluable experience diagnosing and caring for patients with complex medical conditions alongside a knowledgeable team of health care providers.
I have always had a passion for disease prevention and health promotion with special interest in healthy aging. In 2017 I received my certification in Plant Based Nutrition from Cornell University and am working toward my functional medicine degree through IFM (Institute of Functional Medicine). I believe in an individualized approach to care that promotes wellness as well as treats disease. I am board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) and licensed by the state of Virginia to provide autonomous, family-centered healthcare to patients of all ages.
I am married to a wonderful, supportive man and mother to three beautiful children. I am an outdoor enthusiast who will not pass up the chance to run, bike, hike or go on an adventure. I love to travel, learn new things and gain new life experiences.
Along with my amazing colleagues Anna, Lynda and Laura, I look forward to opening this next chapter. I am excited to offer patient centered care that truly is individualized and centered around keeping our patients and community healthy and thriving.

In 1999, my husband, myself and oldest son moved to Front Royal from Roanoke, Virginia with his job as an engineer for Norfolk Southern. Once settled, we ended up with another son on the way. At that time, I was a stay-at-home mother. With a past history in the Army, when 9-11 happened, it sparked a desire for my husband to serve his country again in the National Guard. The Winchester National Guard were activated and were headed to Afghanistan, Kabul, and Iraq for a couple years. At the same time, I decided that I needed to keep myself busy, so I entered the LFCC’s Associate Nursing degree program. I actually finished that program before he got back and worked at Warren Memorial Hospital for a short time before their announcement that all ADN nurses needed to get that BSN. I found out that I qualified for a scholarship that would pay as long as I was in school and academically successful. So it was off to Shenandoah University for their Bachelor’s program. I ultimately continued on into the Family Nurse Practitioner Program, where I met Stacy and Anna, and graduated in 2012.
During my clinical rotations, I was drawn to women’s health and landed in the office of the Women’s Center of Winchester with Drs. Dabinett and Wilson. I then quickly discovered the dire need for more psychiatric care in our area, and so it was back to SU and into their Post-graduate Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner degree program. However, it did not stop there, I continued on to get the Doctor of Nursing Practice. I picked up many different certifications along the way in Trauma informed care, Auricular acupuncture, 200-hour Yoga Instructor, Functional Integrated Mental Health, Level I Pelvic Floor Therapy (moving onto Level II and III to be certified as a Pelvic Floor Therapist), Level I Therapeutic Touch (moving into level II), Reiki practitioner, 100-hour Meditation Instructor, and most recently Urban Zen Integrative therapy. We are planning to work on seeking certification in Functional Medicine after just completing our introductory course.
As a provider, my special interests are in female adolescent care, PCOS management, metabolic syndrome, female sexual health, low libido issues, pelvic floor issues, menopausal symptom treatment, transgender hormone replacement therapy, obesity management, integrative approaches to mental health, and group therapies.
I am a member and the current President of the Northern Shenandoah Region of Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioner (VCNP), a member of American Association of Nurse Practitioner, a member of the Obesity Medicine Association, and a member of American Psychiatric Nurses Association. I am on the Government Relations board of VCNP that was instrumental in writing the bill and successful in making Nurse Practitioners independent providers in Virginia.
I am a married mother of four awesome kiddos, and grandmother to two sweet girls.. I love to read, learn new things, bee keeping, hiking, and taking care of my chickens and potbelly pig, PigPig.
One day I am drinking coffee with Stacy and Anna, next thing you know, here we are… 😊. I look forward to the next chapter in my career. I absolutely love what I do and that patients trust and allow me to play a part in their journey of mental and physical wellness. I look forward to continuing to provide patient care and changing lives.

I began my nursing career in 2012 as a licensed practical nurse, gaining experience in many environments including long-term care, home health, and LTAC. Subsequently, I pursued professional growth by attaining my Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) in 2019, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2021, and then my Master’s degree in 2023 with the concentration in psychiatry.
I practiced as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit (ICU) and then embarked on a global journey as a travel nurse specializing in ICU care.
Since the start of my calling to the nursing profession, mental health has consistently been a subject of great interest and enthusiasm. I have always had a deep sense of understanding and compassion for those who suffer from mental health conditions.
I am excitedly looking forward to getting to know everyone of my patients, learning from them, and finding out what helps them in their healing process. I really believe that if I can bring about beneficial transformation in the life of even just a solitary person, then I have made the correct job choice.
